Privacy policy

Short version: we don't have user accounts, we don't sell data, and we collect about as little as a website reasonably can.

What we collect

This site doesn't require an account, a login, or any registration to read anything on it. Our hosting provider generates standard server logs (the kind almost every website generates — requested pages, timestamps, general technical information like browser type) for operating and securing the site; we don't combine this with any other data to identify individual visitors.

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to count page views and see which pages are read. We never send form contents or email addresses to Google Analytics. Besides standard page views, the site sends three events from your browser: newsletter_signup and form_submit (recording only that a signup or form submission happened) and outbound_click (recording only the domain and path of the link you followed).

If you email us

If you contact us directly (see About for our address), we use your email only to read and respond to what you sent. We don't add you to any list, and we don't share it with anyone else.

Newsletter. If you sign up, we store your email address, the date and time you ticked the consent box, the form you used and the wording you agreed to, and when you confirmed. If you don't click the confirmation link, your signup is deleted automatically after 48 hours. A confirmed subscription is kept until you unsubscribe: the one-click link in every email removes you from our list and from our email provider's list straight away. To stop abuse, we keep a one-way hash of your IP address (never the address itself) for up to one hour. Emails are sent by our email provider, Resend, which uses your address only to deliver them.

Our newsletter emails may include a tracking pixel and tracked links, through our email provider Resend, so we can see in aggregate how many people open an email or click a link. We don't build individual profiles. Confirmation and unsubscribe emails are never tracked.

Review requests. If you use the request-a-review form, we store the brand, product, URL, your email address and the evidence links you send. We keep them for 365 days and use them only to follow up on your request.

Third-party requests this site makes

Pages on this site load web fonts from Google Fonts. Loading a font involves your browser making a request to Google's servers, which is why some sites choose to self-host fonts instead — we haven't made that change yet, and you should assume the same general web-request information (like your IP address) that applies to any external resource reaches Google when a page loads. We don't control what Google does with that request.

This site also loads Google Analytics 4, run by Google. Google, as the analytics provider, receives the information described under What we collect above, along with the general web-request information that reaches any external service, such as your IP address. We don't control what Google does with that information beyond the settings available to us.

Cookies

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. Google Analytics sets first-party analytics cookies in your browser (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID). We don't set cookies for advertising, and we don't sell data. You can block or delete these cookies in your browser settings, or use Google's opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that matters — a new form that collects data, an analytics tool, anything that changes what we said above — we'll update this page and note the date below, not bury the change.
